In our 1899 house, also balloon framed, the previous owners gutted it and redid it with fiberglass batts and 6mil poly. Exterior walls are orginal wood lap siding covered with some type of asbestoes siding. One of the first balloon framed buildings that Snow built was the St. Mary’s Church.
You can still platform frame the addition. If your house was built before the 1830s, then it’s almost certain to be a timber frame home. There you’ll find thick, usually hand-hewn, beams of locally grown timbers.
If you intend to add-on and discover that your home was balloon framed don’t fret. Balloon framing is a style of wood-house building that uses long, vertical 2" x 4"s for the exterior walls. Whichever system you choose be sure to use extra connectors.
An easy way to tell is to go into the basement or attic where the timbers are still visible.
Timber frame homes were typical across much of American until the late 1800s when it was surpassed by balloon framing. I'm not convinced you can properly seal a poly VB in this type of framing. The balloon framing used in houses of that period - I lived in one back in Cincinnati, OH in the 1970's and 80's - allows water vapor that passes through the plaster and lath to be vented up into the attic of your home. And terrible detail to that process as you can feel drafts when the winter wind blows. Ballon framed two Story House with full attic built in 1901.
However, some say that early versions of the method were in use for years before this. Once up there, it usually was able to dissipate out gable vents or through the roofing. Absolutly no insulation in the walls or between floors: first to second and second to attic. Today, we invent a new house for a new land.
